Chilled Education are pleased to work with Sam Holyman, STEM teacher at Aylesford School in Warwick on a range of resources. Sam has developed a series of STEM Club Resources.

STEM Club Activity: Colourful Milk

In this engaging STEM Club activity, students explore the science of surface tension and fat molecules by using soap to disrupt the forces between fat particles in milk. When soap is added, it breaks down the surface tension, causing the fat particles to move. This movement is visualised by adding food colouring to the milk, creating a mesmerising effect.

Students can investigate how different types of milk (e.g., full fat, semi-skimmed, and skimmed) respond to the addition of soap, as well as compare the effects of various hand cleaning products such as soap, detergent, alcohol hand gel, and non-alcohol hand gel. Through this hands-on experiment, students will gain insights into the properties of liquids, surface tension, and molecular behaviour.

The resources for this activity, developed by Sam Holyman, STEM teacher at Aylesford School, provide everything teachers need to guide their students through the experiment. These resources are available for download and offer clear instructions for conducting the experiment, alongside suggestions for further investigation and discussion. This activity provides an exciting and visual way to deepen students' understanding of scientific concepts.
